WV_sealThe West Virginia Christian Education Association began as the “Mountaineer Association of Christian Schools” which was established during the explosive Christian school movement of the 1970s. In the mid-1980s, the name was changed to specifically target WV schools.

WVCEA is affiliated with the American Association of Christian Schools (AACS); Christian schools who become a member of the WVCEA automatically become members of AACS. All member schools operate under the authority of West Virginia Code 18-8-1 (Exemption K of the Compulsory Attendance laws) and West Virginia Code 18-18-1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. Provisions for operation are enumerated in these sections of the code.

childreadSince the 1970s, the number of schools holding membership in the WVCEA has fluctuated, with several schools having been forced to close, largely for financial reasons. The number of schools served by WVCEA has a combined enrollment of approxim
ately 2,800 students. The Association covenants with member schools, who abide by a written constitution. The constitution does not claim administrative authority over any school or any ministry, but it does offer support to member schools in order to continuously improve Christ-centered education. Schools seeking membership in the Association must submit a formal application to the Executive Director of the Association. The Board of Directors governs the WVCEA and makes final decisions on schools admitted as members of the Association.
